Gemma Smith – Psychodynamic & Trauma-Focused Counsellor

Gemma Smith – Psychodynamic & Trauma-Focused Counsellor

I understand that no two people experience life in the same way. Grief, trauma, and emotional struggles can feel isolating, overwhelming, and difficult to process alone. As a Psychodynamic and Trauma-Focused Counsellor, I offer a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace.

Bereavement & Grief Support

Grief can be incredibly lonely, leaving you feeling like no one truly understands what you’re going through. I provide a compassionate and patient approach to help you express and process your loss in a way that feels right for you. Together, we can find ways to navigate this difficult time and support your healing journey.

Trauma & PTSD Support

Experiencing trauma can lead to unsettling symptoms such as panic attacks, flashbacks, dissociation, difficulty sleeping, or trouble focusing. You don’t have to face this alone. I can help you find safety within yourself, understand your body’s responses, and develop grounding techniques to bring a sense of calm and stability.

It’s important to know that you don’t have to talk about your trauma to heal from it. My approach is tailored to your needs, focusing on managing symptoms and improving your everyday life in a way that feels safe and empowering for you.

Understanding Yourself & Your Patterns

We all develop certain behaviours and thought patterns over time—some helpful, others frustrating or confusing. By exploring your past and identifying the root of these patterns, I can help you gain greater self-awareness and the ability to make meaningful changes if you choose to.

I also believe that understanding how the mind works can be reassuring. Where helpful, I offer insights into psychological processes and practical techniques that you can choose to explore—there is no pressure, only an open space for self-discovery.

Building a Therapeutic Relationship

Finding the right therapist is a deeply personal decision. My aim is to build a relationship based on trust, honesty, and understanding. I offer a confidential, judgment-free environment where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with curiosity and compassion. Our sessions are tailored to you—whether structured, creative, or flexible, I adapt my approach to meet your unique needs.

My Approach: Psychodynamic & Creative Counselling

My counselling is rooted in Psychodynamic Therapy, which explores how our past experiences—especially from childhood—shape our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours today. Often, unconscious patterns influence us without us even realizing. Through open discussion, reflection, and creative techniques such as emotions wheels, image cards, and even tarot or energy cards, we can bring awareness to these influences and help you make sense of them in a meaningful way.
