Linsey Sidebottom, Trauma and Attachment Therapist – Children & Families

I am a qualified social worker who has worked with young people and their families since 2001. I worked in various social work teams working with Child Protection, Child in Need and Children in Care before moving into working in a MALT CAMHS Team completing mental health assessments, providing consultations to professional networks, including schools and working therapeutically with children or young people and their families. I have worked within Specialist Children Looked After and Adoption Child and Adolescent Mental Health Teams for seven years and continue to do so on a part-time basis, alongside working independently.

I have an enhanced DBS and is a registered member of the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). I have public liability and professional indemnity insurance through my membership with British Association of Social Workers (BASW).

Training Qualifications

I have trained in Theraplay (Level 2), Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP Level 2) and the Dynamic Maturational Model of attachment (DMM). I have experience of developing formulations for parents, carers and professionals to help build understanding of children’s and young people’s needs; supporting the thinking and decision making around children’s care plans.

I believe that whilst holding the child’s needs at the heart of the work, it is imperative to work with their parents or carers, without judgement. My starting point is that parents and carers are generally the ‘expert’ on their child and family and are doing the best they can with what they’ve got. Therefore, therapeutic work generally needs to be a collaborative effort to be the most effective for the family.

I feel that the knowledge and understanding about developmental trauma and therapeutic parenting, which tends to be shared with foster parents and adopters through training, supervision and Children Looked After CAMHS Team involvement, could be shared with birth families, kinship carers and professionals in a way that can inform the development of a stronger understanding of relational strategies and presenting behaviour. Through an improved understanding, empathy has the chance to grow, and a deeper sense of relational connectedness can develop.

I have significant experience in drawing upon my skills and knowledge within therapy, consultations, work in schools, group work and training packages. I have worked alongside colleagues, to facilitate an attachment based therapeutic group for foster parents and residential group home staff. I am open to thinking creatively to develop bespoke packages to meet the needs of individuals, families, and professionals working to support children and young people’s emotional and mental health needs.
