Linsey Sidebottom, Trauma and Attachment Therapist – Children & Families

I am an Attachment and Trauma Specialist Social Worker working both independently and in association with Derbyshire Psychology  based at the Matlock Therapy

I provide assessments, consultations and therapeutic work.  I strongly believe in the importance of understanding a child and their family in the context of their previous experiences, but also in relation to their current experiences of the wider system, of which they are part.  So, in working with children who are unable to live with their birth parents, I feel it is important to work closely with the professional network, including their social worker and school, to ensure the best possible outcomes.

I also provide training which can be tailored to fit the specific needs of the client.

Ethic

I believe that whilst holding the child’s needs at the heart of the work, it is imperative to work with their parents or carers, without judgement.  My starting point is that parents and carers are generally the ‘expert’ on their child and family and are doing the best they can with what they’ve got.   Therefore, therapeutic work generally needs to be a collaborative effort to be the most effective for the family.

I feel that the knowledge and understanding about developmental trauma and therapeutic parenting, which has tended to be shared with foster parents and adopters through training, supervision and Children Looked After CAMHS Team involvement, can be shared with birth families, kinship carers and professionals in a way that can inform the development of a stronger understanding of the impact of developmental trauma, relational strategies and presenting behaviour.  Through an improved understanding, empathy has the chance to grow, and a deeper sense of relational connectedness can develop.

Training Qualifications

I have trained in Theraplay (Level 2), Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP Level 2) and the Dynamic Maturational Model of attachment (DMM).  I am currently training in EMDR, and by March 2021 I hope to have completed the four parts to be able to use EMDR with children.

I have experience of developing formulations for parents, carers and professionals to help build understanding of children’s and young people’s needs; supporting the thinking and decision making around children’s care plans.

As a qualified social worker I have worked with young people and their families since 2001.  In 2008 I completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.  I have worked in various social work teams working with Child Protection, Child in Need and Children in Care before moving into CAMHS.  Whilst in the Community CAMHS Team I completed mental health assessments, provided consultations to professional networks, including schools and worked directly with children or young people and their families.  I worked within Specialist Children Looked After and Adoption Child and Adolescent Mental Health Teams for over seven years, alongside working independently.  In 2019 I joined an Adoption Support Agency in Sheffield, specialising in the treatment of developmental trauma and attachment difficulties, and I continue to work there part-time alongside my independent work in Derbyshire.

Professional Registration

I have an enhanced DBS and in line with recent changes, moved from being a registered member of the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) to being registered with Social Work England in 2019.  I have public liability and professional indemnity insurance through my membership with British Association of Social Workers (BASW).  I access regular clinical supervision with a DDP consultant/Consultant Clinical Psychologist as well as peer supervision with a multi-disciplinary team of associates.

Referrals and Appointments

Referrals for appointments are welcomed either from parents, carers or professionals supporting a young person and their family.  For children who are adopted or cared for on a Special Guardianship Order (SGO) funding is available from the Adoption Support Fund (ASF), parents/carers should contact Adoption East Midlands (adoptioneastmidlands.org.uk) to access this.  We are able to provide quotes to support applications and then can arrange appointments once funding has been formally confirmed.

Generally, appointments are available on:

Monday:  9am – 3pm

Tuesday:  9am – 3pm

Fridays:  12pm – 3pm

I have some flexibility around these times, but this would need to be discussed on an individual basis.
