I specialise in mental health and wellbeing, having started my career with mental health training, working as an NHS Staff Nurse on an acute mental health ward. I also work in Primary Care supporting patients referred by their GP, who are often overwhelmed by life circumstances. This includes exploring possible neurodiversity or ways of managing life stresses.
Understanding the difficulties we can all face with our mental health enables me to work compassionately with a wide range of life issues. These include stress, anxiety, depression, loss and bereavement, relationship and family issues, trauma, domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, OCD, mental health conditions and many more.
I hold an optimistic view of human nature and believe that people can overcome adversity with the right support. As a trauma-informed counsellor, I also work for a Derbyshire charity that helps survivors of childhood abuse and domestic violence.
I enjoy working with young people, having worked as a counsellor within School Sixth Forms and for Derby University Counselling Service. My MSc academic research explored the experience of families where neurodiversity or mental health issues impact adolescence. This has given me a greater understanding of the challenges faced by family members, especially by adolescent siblings. I have a keen interest in how family members can be best supported under these circumstances. I hold a BACP certificate for counselling young people.
Life transitions and challenges can feel overwhelming, particularly in today’s world. This can make us feel isolated, disconnected from others and often from our true selves. Sometimes this affects our relationships; we can’t always find the right words to explain it to those closest to us or it can feel like they’re not listening. Recognising that you’re struggling is difficult, but taking that first step to contact a therapist and beginning to open up and talk means you’re no longer facing things alone. Together we can explore and understand what’s going on for you.
I can offer you a safe space to reconnect with your inner voice and values and make sense of what’s going on in your life. I can support you in moving forward in life. You may have goals of your own, or wish to find a better balance between emotional wellbeing, physical health, and inner calm.
Counselling enables individuals to share difficult and often unvoiced feelings, helping reduce symptoms and understand ourselves better. You may feel emotionally out of control, overthink, or repeat patterns in relationships or at work. Gaining insight into why you feel like this opens routes for change and helps you overcome these feelings.
Whatever your struggle, I will listen with no judgement and accept you as you are. So please don’t feel nervous taking this first step in contacting me, to see if I’m the right therapist for you.
How I work:
From a person centred approach, I integrate attachment theory with a variety of techniques including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I will adapt my approach to your individual needs and tailor any therapy to best suit you.
Please get in touch for a free 15 minute initial chat, about the issues you may be facing. You can then decide if I am the right therapist for you and choose whether to book a further counselling session with me. I work flexibly to help fit appointments into your weekly life.
